Privacy Policy
Hare is a personal AI running coach for iPhone. This policy explains what we collect, what we do with it, who else processes it, and what control you have over it. We try to keep this short and honest.
What we collect
- Apple sign-in details. When you sign in with Apple, we receive an opaque user identifier and (if you choose to share them) your email and name. We never receive your Apple ID password. If you subscribe, Apple handles the payment — we only learn your subscription status, never your card details.
- Health data you grant access to. Heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep, workouts, VO2 max, running-form metrics, and nutrition (if you log it) are read from Apple Health on your device. For each outdoor run we also send a downsampled per-run stream — heart rate plus GPS location and altitude — to our server to compute richer run metrics. See "Where your health data lives" below for exactly what leaves your phone and why.
- Your conversations with the coach. Messages you send to the coach, the coach's replies, your training plan, remembered preferences, and the coach's own working notes are stored on our server so the coach can keep context across sessions.
- Weather for your runs. We look up the weather at the time and place each run started and keep the result (temperature, wind, rain, humidity) so the coach can factor conditions into run reviews.
- Device tokens for notifications. If you enable push notifications we store an Apple Push Notification token so we can send briefings.
- Feedback you send. If you use the in-app feedback form, we store your message along with the app version and basic device info so we can reproduce the problem.
- Usage and crash data. We use PostHog for product analytics and Sentry for crash and error reports — details and the opt-out are below.
Where your health data lives
Most of your Apple Health data stays on your phone. The app turns the raw samples into compact summaries (today's readiness numbers, recent daily metrics, and per-run stats like distance, pace, heart rate, and splits) and sends those summaries to our server with each coaching request. We also keep your latest summary snapshot on the server so your morning and evening briefings can be generated while your phone is asleep.
There is one exception, new in this version. For each outdoor run, the app sends a downsampled per-run stream — about one sample every second or two of heart rate, GPS location, and altitude — to our server, where we store it and compute richer metrics from it: aerobic decoupling (how your heart rate drifted against your pace), grade-adjusted pace, automatic detection of intervals, and recognition of routes you run often. We keep the stream so we can improve and re-run those calculations over time without asking your phone to send it again. This is a deliberate change from earlier versions, which said the full GPS trail and beat-by-beat heart data never left your phone — for these metrics to work, a downsampled copy now does. We still never receive the untouched, full-resolution Apple Health samples, and the only things we do with your location are compute these run metrics and look up the weather at each run's start.
How we use it
Your data is used solely to run Hare — training plans, daily readiness, run reviews, briefings, and coach replies — plus understanding how the app is used and fixing crashes. We never sell your data. Your health data is never used for advertising or marketing — not by us, and not by any company we work with.
Who processes your data
Nobody buys, rents, or borrows your data. These are the services that process it so Hare can work:
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, subscription billing through the App Store, and push notification delivery.
- OpenRouter and the AI model providers behind it — receive the messages you send the coach and the health and training summaries described above with each request, to generate the coach's replies and plans. This is the third-party AI processing you consent to during onboarding. Our accounts with these providers are configured to disallow training on your data.
- Open-Meteo — receives the starting coordinates and time of a workout to fetch the weather. The request carries no name, email, or account identifier.
- Sentry — receives crash and error reports from the app and our server, tagged with your user ID, so we can find and fix bugs.
- PostHog — receives product analytics events (which features get used, where onboarding stalls) tied to a pseudonymous user ID, not your name or email. No advertising trackers, no session recording. You can opt out any time in Settings → Analytics.
- Render — hosts our server and the managed Postgres database where the server-side data above is stored.
Analytics opt-out
Settings → Analytics turns PostHog analytics off on your device, immediately. Crash reporting stays on — it's how we find out the app is broken.
Exporting your data
Settings → Export my data gives you a JSON file of the data we store for you: account details, preferences, coach conversations and memories, plans, briefings, feedback, sign-in sessions, the weather cache, and your per-run streams together with the metrics and routes computed from them.
Deleting your account
Open Settings → Delete account in the app. This permanently removes your server records — account, coach conversations, plans, preferences, briefings, notification tokens, usage logs, and your per-run streams, computed run metrics, and saved routes — immediately, and asks Apple to disconnect Hare from your Apple ID. One exception: we keep a salted, one-way hash of your Apple sign-in identifier together with your trial dates, so a deleted account can't be recreated to claim a fresh free trial. That record contains no name, no email, and no health data, and we use it for nothing else.
Children
Hare is not intended for anyone under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that affects you, we'll update the effective date and notify you in the app the next time you open it.
